BIR Announces Extension Of Hours For Filing Taxes

Government / News / Virgin Islands / April 6, 2017

The Bureau of Internal Revenue (B.I.R.) on Wednesday announced that it will extend the hours for filing taxes from April 12 through April 18, the latter being the last day for residents to file their tax returns.

B.I.R.’s offices on St. Thomas and St. Croix will have extended hours for the convenience of taxpayers based on the following schedule:

On St. Croix, at B.I.R.’s office, the extended office hours are as follows: Wednesday, April 12th from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Tuesday, April 18th from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.

On St. Thomas, the extended hours and locations are as follows: Red Hook on Wednesday, April 12th from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00p.m. And Tuesday, April 18th from 7:00a.m. to 9:00p.m.

Also on Wednesday, April 12, Nisky Center will be open from 7:00 a.m. to 7:00p.m. and Tuesday, April 18th from 7:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m.

On St. John, the office will remain open until 5:00 p.m. to accommodate the taxpayers on Wednesday, April 12th and Tuesday, April 18th.

Taxpayers who are unable to file their 2016 returns by the April 18 due date are reminded that they can file an extension by using Form 4868, according to B.I.R. To obtain approval of the extension, the taxpayer must properly estimate the tax liability due and file the Form 4868 no later than April 18. The extension is only for the filing of the tax return, according to B.I.R. Taxpayers who owe taxes must pay the tax due on April 18 to avoid the failure to pay penalty.

Taxpayers are also reminded that they cannot file their returns using the e-filing option.

Questions about the extended office hours should be directed to Tamarah Parson-Smalls at 715-1040, ext. 2249.
