Kenneth Gittens Will Most Likely Be Out Of Senate Come January

Breaking News / News / Politics / Top Stories / Virgin Islands / November 8, 2016

ST. CROIX — Senator Kenneth Gittens will most likely be out of the Senate come January, after falling behind to 8th, just 70 votes away from Senator Neville James. And the chance that Mr. Gittens — the Committee on Rules and Judiciary chairman, as well as the senator who spearheaded election reform legislation — could mount a comeback is slim, as Elections Supervisor Caroline Fawkes told this publication tonight that only absentee and walk-in ballots are outstanding, and they total less than 200. It means that Mr. Gittens would have to collect over 35 percent of the remaining votes without the other candidates gaining any ground.

The news is not shocking; it was predicted by political watchers that either Mr. Gittens or Mr. James would be out of a seat because of Mrs. Hansen.

Speaking to The Consortium tonight, Mr. Gittens said he would accept voters’ decision.

“Whatever the outcome I’m satisfied,” he said. “I think I have served the people and served the people well, and I’ll be satisfied with whatever the people’s choice may be.”

Asked if he was disappointed with the number of votes he collected, the senator would not concede disappointment, but said he was expecting to receive more votes. “I was expecting more, but disappointed? Again, no, I’m not. Again it’s the people’s choice. We live in a Democratic society and the people have a right to choose who their representatives are,” Mr. Gittens said.

I wear many hats, I suppose, but the one which fits me best would be journalism, second to that would be radio personality, thirdly singer/songwriter and down the line. I've been the Editor-In-Chief at my videogames website, Gamesthirst, for over 5 years, writing over 7,000 articles and more than 2 million words. I'm also very passionate about where I live, the United States Virgin Islands, and I'm intent on making it a better place by being resourceful and keeping our leaders honest. VI Consortium was birthed out of said desire, hopefully my efforts bear fruit. Reach me at [email protected].
