The Department of Health held three outreach events throughout the territory on Friday, which were aimed at informing the community about the various services that it offers, as well as providing on-the-spot care for those in need, the government department has made known.
The activities were a collaborative effort between D.O.H.’s Community Health Services program and the Office of the Governor, according to Nykole Tsyon, D.O.H.’s director of public relations. They held an outreach event at the Louis E. Brown Housing Community for the elderly, located on St. Croix, where D.O.H.’s mobile van was used to provide free health screenings (blood sugar, cholesterol and blood pressure) to approximately 20 residents.
In addition, the immunization program collaborated with AARP and provided free flu vaccinations to over 200 residents while stationed in the Sunny Isle parking lot, according to the release. This month the immunization program has given approximately 330 free immunizations to the residents on the island of St. Croix.
Also on Friday, despite rainfall in St. Thomas, D.O.H.’s Community Health Services Program, the Zika support staff and the immunization program supported Crown Bay Marina’s Health Expo, providing free breast exams, blood pressure, glucose, and cholesterol screenings, as well as free Zika testing and free flu shots to all in attendance. Approximately 175 people received services from the at the expo, Ms. Tyson said. The immunization division gave free flu vaccinations to about 95 individuals; the community health program assisted approximately 61; and 19 people received free Zika tests.
A total of approximately 400 residents territory-wide received free health services on Friday from D.O.H., Ms. Tyson said.
