ST. THOMAS — V.I. Superior Court Judge Kathleen Mackay granted a motion from Attorney General Claude Earl Walker to increase the bail amount for K’Moi Corraspe, the V.I. D.O.J. announced Wednesday.
Mr. Corraspe, above, age 22, is charged with one count each of first-degree murder, first-degree assault, third-degree assault, unauthorized use of a firearm during the commission of a crime of violence and first-degree reckless endangerment in connection with the shooting death of Kadeem John on Dec. 10, 2015.
Officers executed a warrant for Mr. Corraspe’s arrest and on Tuesday; he was extradited to St. Thomas from New York, where he had flown to eight days after Mr. John was killed. His bail was set at $250,000.
At Mr. Corrapse’s advise-of-rights hearing Wednesday, Assistant Attorney General Eugene James Connor, Jr., motioned the court to double the bail amount, reasoning that the accused is an extreme flight risk and an extreme danger to the community. Judge Mackay concurred with the prosecution’s argument and increased Mr. Corraspe’s bail to $500,000 cash bond.
If he is able to secure his release, Mr. Corraspe will have to abide by a number of court-imposed bail conditions, which include being placed under 24-hour house arrest with electronic monitoring and having no contact with witnesses.
Mr. Corraspe is scheduled to make his second court appearance on Oct. 13 for his arraignment hearing at which he will formally answer to the charges.
