ST. CROIX — The Waste Management Authority said via a press release issued Tuesday that the St. Croix Transfer Station will close at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, essentially half-day, as the transfer station’s scale will be taken offline in preparation for calibration and adjustments for the implementation of W.M.A.’s new tipping fees.
Regular operating hours will resume on Monday, October 3, at 6:00 a.m.
A bill sponsored by Senator Novelle Francis that seeks to delay implementation of the tipping fees was approved by the full Senate and forwarded to Governor Kenneth Mapp. But it remains unclear whether Mr. Mapp — who forged legislation requesting funding for W.M.A. to help pay its vendors — will sign the measure into law or veto it.
W.M.A. says it’s currently finalizing plans for the implementation of the new fees, and that it would hold another series of meetings to provide updates on the projected implementation date, the fee structure, policies, and procedures.
The tipping fee per ton ranges from $31.28 to $65.26 depending on the type of material being disposed, W.M.A. says. They will be levied and collected from all solid waste haulers and other direct customers that deliver solid waste to the three W.M.A. disposal facilities, including the St. Croix Transfer Station, the Bovoni Landfill in St. Thomas and the Susannaberg Transfer Station in St. John.
According to W.M.A., each load of solid waste delivered will be weighed and categorized at the waste disposal facilities’ scale house upon arrival. The fees will be calculated based on the type of waste delivered and the weight of the load. If a customer has less than 1 ton to dispose, while the units of the fee are in tons, the rate will be converted to pounds to apply the appropriate charge.
Waste Management apologized for any inconvenience the early closure may cause.
