Gunshots Rattle Golden Rock Area, Unnerving Breezes Restaurant Patrons; Stolen Vehicle Recovered

Breaking News / Business / Crime / Featured / News / Virgin Islands / September 18, 2016

ST. CROIX — Multiple gunshots rattled residents and businesses in Golden Rock and surrounding neighborhoods, Police Commissioner Delroy Richards confirmed to The Consortium late Saturday. He described the incident as one perpetrator chasing another, as the shooting was heard in a number of neighborhoods at varying times.

Gunshots were also heard near the Breezes Restaurant, unnerving those who had visited the establishment for dinner.

Mr. Richards, citing police officers responding to the incidents, said the shots rang out after 9:00 p.m. They were followed by a 911 call that said shots were being discharged between Breezes and LBJ Gardens, hinting that whomever was doing the shooting was chasing a moving target.

“Multiple police units responded, and I know they have secured a car with items of evidentiary value,” Mr. Richards said, adding that the items were found in a vehicle stolen from Whim, Frederiksted. “It was on the radar as one of the cars reported stolen,” he said.

The police commissioner also made known that another police officer recovered a car by Car Zone in La Grande Princesse, which was damaged by multiple gunshots.

“It looks like somebody was chasing somebody and shots were being fired,” Mr. Richards said. He continued by stating that the individuals involved in last night’s incident continued moving, as shots were reportedly heard in Estate Hambug and Estate Cane Garden, which police units also responded to.

No one was injured during the incidents, but Breezes Restaurant’s operations was affected as patrons had to leave following the shooting.

Police are continuing their investigation into the incidents, Mr. Richards said, and are asking anyone with information that may lead to arrests to call the Criminal Investigation Bureau at 340 778-2211 or (340) 712 6106, the anonymous tip line, Crime Stoppers VI at 1 800 222 TIPS (8477), or 911.
