ST. CROIX — Lieutenant Governor Osbert Potter will travel out of the territory Tuesday heading to the Rio Olympics, a press release Mr. Potter’s office issued this afternoon has made known.
A delegation of seven athletes traveled to Rio to represent the U.S. Virgin Islands, and Mr. Potter will serve as head of state for the group. He will be attending various events and the closing ceremonies where Mr. Potter is expected to march with the V.I. athletes.
“We need to support our athletes at all times, wherever they are,” Mr. Potter said. “When they do good, we do good. The encouragement is always good for them, especially when they are out of the territory.”
The lieutenant governor will return to the territory from Brazil on August 23, and will depart on August 25 to attend the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (N.A.I.C.) Summer Meeting in San Diego, California.
The summer meeting will host insurance regulators from numerous states, the District of Columbia and the 5 U.S. territories. Mr. Potter serves as the territory’s commissioner of Insurance. Through the N.A.I.C., state insurance regulators establish standards and best practices, conduct peer review, and coordinate their regulatory oversight.
Mr. Potter will return to the territory from San Diego on September 1.
In accordance with the Revised Organic Act, Senate President Neville James will serve as acting lieutenant governor while the second in command is out.
