ST. CROIX — Senator Novelle Francis said via press release on Thursday that the territory needs to definitively commit to enhancing its tourism product, particularly on the island of St. Croix. Mr. Francis says the territory must act on long discussed plans to develop cultural and heritage tourism, in order to remain competitive with Cuba and other Caribbean destinations.
Mr. Francis, who attended the annual cruise line trade event in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, says the territory’s rich cultural history provides key opportunities to enhance its tourism product and visitor experience.
“Cruise lines are looking for unique experiences to offer their passengers. Passengers in turn are looking for authentic experiences,” Mr. Francis said. “The timing is right for the territory to fully capitalize on our history and heritage under seven flags, our historic buildings and sites such as Maroon Ridge and other areas that make us unique.”
The freshman senator believes the designation of St. Croix as a National Heritage Area (N.H.A.) is key to advancing the tourism industry. And he will be meeting with Congresswoman Stacey Plaskett later this month to discuss resuming efforts to secure the congressional designation of St. Croix as an N.H.A.
The release says N.H.A.’s support a community-driven approach to heritage conservation and economic development. This designation, the release adds, also makes federal funds available to support development. Across the U.S., areas having this designation have profited financially, and Ms. Plaskett would need to reintroduce the bill for N.H.A. designation.
Mr. Francis says building our tourism industry has greater implications for the community. “In addition to supporting the economy, residents will also benefit from our culture and history becoming more tangible and accessible.”
