Man Shot In Campo Rico Says He Was Innocent Bystander; Police Reveal Names Of Good Hope Shooting Victims

Breaking News / Crime / News / Virgin Islands / March 15, 2016

ST. CROIX — A man who was shot on Sunday near an area in Campo Rico called “The Turf”, said he had no idea why someone would want to shoot him, V.I.P.D. Media Specialist Sakeeda Freeman announced late Monday.

A barrage of gunshots rang out in Campo Rico just before 11:00 a.m. on Sunday, leaving one man injured, multiple police sources had confirmed to The Consortium. The incident appeared to be retaliatory in nature, following a drive-by shooting incident on Saturday at a gas station near the Concordia intersection on the Queen Mary Highway (Centerline Road).

However, following the incident, officers spoke with the victim, who stated that he was at the Campo Rico Turf next to a gazebo, when he observed two unknown male individuals dressed in all black with their faces covered firing shots towards him. The victim added that he began to flee the area and was shot in the right thigh.

Emergency medical technicians arrived on the scene and immediately transported the victim to the Juan Luis Hospital for medical treatment. The victim was unable to provide any information regarding the identity of the individuals who shot after him, nor any reason as to why anyone would want to shoot him.

Seventeen shell casings were discovered at the scene and the incident remains under active investigation, according to police.

Elsewhere, police on Tuesday released the names of the two victims who were badly wounded during last night’s barrage of shootings in Good Hope. They were identified as 26-year-old Robert Brown and 33-year-old Nioka Shaw.
