ST. CROIX — A man named Oronde Gumbs, above, was remanded to the Bureau of Corrections on Sunday, where his advise-of-rights were read to him after breaking into his neighbor’s house and pointing a gun to his forehead, V.I.P.D. Media Specialist Sakeeda Freeman announced this afternoon.
The police report did not clarify whether Mr. Gumbs, 19, was attempting to rob the victim, but Mr. Gumbs, with a black shirt covering his face, kicked the screen of his neighbor’s front door and pointed the gun towards his forehead. The victim then raised both his hands as a self-defense mechanism, according to the report. The report also stated that a 15-year-old minor was on guard on the victim’s porch.
Then, without explaining what occurred during the time the suspect was in the victim’s home, the report says the suspect in the house and the other watching guard on the porch, exited the victim’s home, but not before firing one gunshot.
Police, who had been alerted of the break-in at 1:07 p.m. on Sunday, said the victim told them he had a good idea of who one of the suspects was, as he recognized his voice to be that of Mr. Gumbs, the son of the victim’s next-door neighbor.
Officers later made contact with the victim’s neighbor, who was leaving his home at the time. The neighbor informed officers that he would bring in his son, Mr. Gumbs, to the Ancilmo D. Marshall Command once he was located.
Moments later, officers received notification that the suspects were observed in the neighbor’s pick-up truck. Officers then located the vehicle and successfully detained Mr. Gumbs and the minor, and transported them to the Ancilmo D. Marshall Command for further investigation.
Mr. Gumbs and the minor were charged with first degree burglary. The minor was transported to the Youth Rehabilitation Center, while Mr. Gumbs is sitting in Golden Grove after failing to make bail, an amount of which was not revealed by the report.
