WICO Taking Precautionary Measures To Prevent Spread Of Zika Virus

Breaking News / Caribbean / Featured / Health / Virgin Islands / January 29, 2016

ST. THOMAS — The management of the West Indian Company, Ltd. is taking property-wide precautions in an effort to deter the outbreak and spread of the Zika virus, a press release WICO issued on Friday has made known. Above, tourists traveling on Royal Caribbean’s Anthem of the Seas de-board at the WICO dock.

“WICO’s property management division inspected our grounds and surrounding areas in an effort to help protect tenants, their employees, residents and visitors against the spread of the Zika virus,” said Joseph B. Boschulte, president and CEO of WICO. “This is a high-traffic area. This is an on-going effort, and our emphasis is on prevention through precaution in an effort to provide an environment that is as safe as possible for everyone who comes to the dock and the company’s affiliated properties.”

The company is in the process of taking all environmentally recommended precautions outlined in the Department of Tourism’s Zika Guidelines for travelers and hotel partners. To reduce the likelihood of mosquito breeding sites, WICO will identify and treat locations where there is standing water or moisture. They also will treat cisterns, trash disposal areas, trash compactors and bin sites.

Additionally, WICO is in the process of providing Havensight Mall tenants with a copy of D.O.T.’s Zika guidelines. The information also will be shared with the management of Port of Sale and Yacht Haven Grande.

WICO also is in the process of encouraging tenants and affiliates to share the Zika guidelines with visitors and residents doing business in the area, the release concluded.
