News / Virgin Islands / December 20, 2015

ST. CROIX — A man who was shot multiple times at a dump site in Estate Concordia on Saturday night, though wounded, was able to wrestle the gun away from the suspect, who then fled the scene in a silver pickup truck, VIPD Public Information Officer Kevin Jackson announced this morning.

According to Mr. Jackson, the 911 emergency call center received a report of a shooting incident that occurred at the dumpsite. Responding officers and detectives arrived at the location and found the victim of the shooting, a 52-year-old man, who had been shot multiple times. The victim was taken to the Juan F. Luis Hospital and Medical Center by ambulance and was able to provide details of the incident.

According to the preliminary information gathered, the victim was at the dumpsite disposing trash when the suspect, who he is familiar with, approached him and began a conversation. The suspect, described as a Hispanic male, wearing a black t-shirt and a pair of grey short pants, then took out a firearm and shot the victim multiple times.

However, after being shot, the victim physically struggled with the suspect and wrenched the gun away from him and the suspect fled the dumpsite in a silver pickup truck.

Officers and detectives went in search of the suspect, and were able to locate him in Estate LaReine, where he was arrested and charged at 10:28 p.m.

Daniel Carino, a 33-year-old man from Estate Whim, was arrested and charged with first degree assault after he was positively identified by the victim of the assault.

Unable to make bail of $75,000, Carino was remanded to the Bureau of Corrections pending his advise-of-rights hearing.

Correction: December 20, 2015

A previous version of this story incorrectly stated that the color of the truck that the assailant fled with was white, when it was silver. The story has been updated to reflect the correct information.
