ST. CROIX– In an effort to aid in relief efforts on the island of Dominica in the wake of the deadly Tropical Storm Erika, St. Croix Rescue deployed three of its members to the Commonwealth on Sept. 6, according to a press release issued by the organization Sunday night.

Deployed members include Team Leader Assistant Chief Modestus John-Baptiste, Lt. Eugene Phipps and Cmdr. David Goodrich.

The team responded to a request from Deputy Chief Fire Officer Farley J. Riviere Acting Chief, Dominica Fire & Ambulance Service. St. Croix Rescue members will be working with the Fire Service while in the country.

The Rescue mission includes:

  • Fire station coverage – to provide manpower for fire stations to relieve firefighters and EMTs of some of their duties
  • To assist the National Disaster Coordinator of Dominica with damage assessments
  • To support medical operations/Field Medical Clinic
  • To promote the good will of the people of the U.S. Virgin Islands. The mission is supported by the Caribbean
  • Association of Fire Chiefs.
  • To provide the overall disaster response efforts in support of CDEMA and the National Disaster Coordinator of Dominica.

St. Croix Rescue says there are an additional 20 Rescue members from St. Croix, St. John and St. Thomas that are prepared to deploy, some as early as Tuesday, if the need for outside assistance still exists.
