ST. CROIX — Governor Kenneth Mapp has lifted the curfew for the island of St. Croix as of 11:00 this morning, according to Mapp’s Communications Director, Kimberly Jones.
According to Jones, after conducting a full assessment of the island, the governor moved to lift the curfew. The chief executive has not asked government employees to report to work today, however, in speaking with his commissioners, directors and other cabinet members, the territory’s leader instructed them to contact individual essential employees if they were needed on the job.
Mapp had previously declared a state of emergency for the entire territory, following directives from VITEMA and the Dept. of Public Works, who informed him that there were downed trees and WAPA poles across the territory that may work as hazards to motorists.
The St. Thomas-St. John district curfew was lifted as of 8:00 a.m. today, and government employees there were asked to report to work for 11:00 a.m.
Major banks, including Scotiabank and Firstbank also announced the reopening of services in St. Thomas and St. John at 12 noon and 10:00 a.m. respectively, following the curfew lift. The banks have yet to make reopening announcements for St. Croix.
Banco Popular in Tortola and St. Thomas have been opened as of 10:00 a.m. today.
Also, the St. Croix Transfer Station will be opened for the acceptance of storm debris from the Department of Public Works and its designated haulers only.
