Former Corrections Officer Sentenced to Six Months in Prison

News / Virgin Islands / August 14, 2015

ST. CROIX – District Court Judge Wilma A. Lewis on August 11, sentenced Marcel Scotland, 31, to six months in prison for providing prison contraband, US Attorney Ronald W. Sharpe announced on Thursday. Judge Lewis also sentenced Scotland to serve three years of supervised release and pay a fine of $1,000 and a special assessment of $100.

On January 16, 2015, Scotland pleaded guilty in District Court on here to providing prison contraband.

According to the plea agreement filed with the court, on January 31, 2014, Scotland was a corrections officer employed with the Virgin Islands Bureau of Corrections (“BOC”) on the island. When Scotland entered the Golden Grove Correctional Facility on that day, a search of his bag by a fellow corrections officer revealed multiple cigarette lighters, rolling papers, cookies, multiple dime baggies and a bag containing approximately 64 grams of marijuana.

The case was investigated by the BOC and U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Alphonso Andrews.
