Caribbean Color Exhibit Opening

Date: Saturday, March 21 – 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Location: Former Havana Nine store in Yacht Haven Grande – St. Thomas

Details: The 2015 Caribbean Color Juried Art Exhibition, hosted by Artvi Advocates and themed “Dream In Green,” will hold an opening reception. For the exhibit, Virgin Islands’ artists of all mediums were asked to let their imaginations soar by celebrating every form of green, either the color green or its perceived symbolism. Artwork will be solely judged by the viewing public. The exhibit will run through April 5.

 

Our Living Legacy: A Celebration of Crucian Connection Between People and Plants

Date: Sunday, March 22 – Noon to 5 p.m.

Location: St. George Village Botanical Garden – St. Croix

Details: The grounds and Great Hall will be filled with the sounds, scents and beauty of Crucian Culture that reflect the Botanical Heritage of St. Croix. Enjoy displays of the horticultural talents of island residents with orchids, hibiscus and bonsai. The beauty of the living plants will be reflected in the exhibit and sale of paintings by local artists. Traditional food and drinks will be sold on the grounds. Enjoy moko jumbie dancers, as well as traditional music and dance featuring quadrille and quelbe. Admission is $10 per car.

 

Diageo USVI Charity Bowling Event

Date: Sunday, March 22 – 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Location: Tropical Ten Pins Bowling Alley in Castle Coakley – St. Croix
Details: Diageo USVI C.A.R.E.s, an employee group at Diageo USVI, invites the public to participate in the Nemecio “Mecio” Camacho III Bowl for Charity event. The annual event honors C.A.R.E.’s fellow member who died in March 2012 at the age of 23. Lanes will be opened for complimentary bowling on a first-come, first-serve basis. Attendees are asked to bring nonperishable food items that will be donated to Lutheran Social Services.

V.I. Port Authority Meeting with St. Croix Off-Airport Car Rentals

Date: Wednesday, March 25 at 6 p.m.

Location: Port Authority conference room – second floor of the Rohlsen Airport Terminal

Details: Virgin Islands Port Authority Executive Director Carlton Dowe invites all off-airport car rental business owners to meet with Port Authority officials to discuss new operational procedures and programs that will be implemented at the Henry E. Caribbean Counselors Association’s Spring College Fair

Date: Wednesday, March 25 – 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

Location: MCM Center at Antilles School – St. Thomas

Details: All high schools in the territory are invited to attend the event. Institiutions expected to be represented at the fair include: BPP University (UK), Bryant University, Elon University, Florida International University, Johnson & Wales University, Marymount Manhattan College, Marywood University, New York University, Pace University, Pennsylvania State University, Rider University, Siena College, Simmons College, Stevenson University, Syracuse University, University of Dayton, and University of Wisconsin-Madison

 

Inaugural Virgin Islands Literary Festival and Book Fair

Date:  March 26 – March 29

Location: University of the Virgin Islands Albert A. Sheen Campus on St. Croix

Details: Acclaimed Caribbean author Jamaica Kincaid, and other top writers from throughout the Caribbean and world will share insights on writing, publishing and the importance of literacy during the inaugural Virgin Islands Literary Festival and Book Fair themed “Embracing Literacy for Life.” The four-day festival is presented by the UVI College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences and will feature numerous events, including a literary island tour, book fairs, book signings, and a theatrical performance on a St. Croix historical figure and activist. For a full schedule of activities, and to register and pay online, go here.

 

Posthumous 100th Birthday Celebration of Delta M. Dorsch and the Rededication of the Dorsch Cultural Activities Center

Date:  Friday, March 27 –  5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Location: The Dorsch Center in Frederiksted – St. Croix

Details: Mrs. Dorsch was considered to be a cultural icon for her more than 70 years of chronicling and preserving the language art tradition of Virgin Islands storytelling prior to her passing in 2011 at the age of 95. She was a renowned educator, legendary storyteller, author and tradition-bearer. The event will feature a host of activities, and is free and open to the public.

 

St. Croix Landmarks Society Annual Membership Meeting

Date:  Saturday, March 28 –  2 p.m.

Location: Estate Whim Museum, Frederiksted – St. Croix

Details: Come early and enjoy Crucian Folklife at Whim Museum beginning at 11 a.m. Plus, immediately following the membership meeting, the dedication of the Carol R. Wakefield Reading Room Research Library & Archives will take place at 2:45 p.m.
