Dept. of Labor Accepting Applications For Summer Internship Program

The Virgin Islands Department of Labor (DOL) is now accepting applications for its long-standing ‘Labor Investing For Tomorrow’ (LIFT) summer internship program, the department’s acting Commissioner Catherine Hendry has announced.

The territory-wide LIFT program provides paid internship opportunities for college juniors, seniors, and graduate students in their chosen careers.

Undergraduates are paid $11 per hour, while graduate students are paid $12 per hour. The program allows for a 35-hour work week, and interns are required to participate in a community service activity, either individually or within a group.

Applications can be downloaded here, or on the DOL website under the ‘Forms’ tab (Youth Employment Opportunities – LIFT 2015 application). They may also  be obtained by emailing [email protected], or can be picked up at the St. Croix office located at 4401 Sion Farm-STE 1 or on St. Thomas at 2353 Kronprindsens Gade.

The final day to submit applications is March 20 and DOL officials say students will begin being notified of their status for the summer program by the end of April.

A total of 30 students have historically been accepted to the program, but DOL officials say the number could change this year. It was not made known if the number would go up or down.

Now in its 26th year, LIFT also gives students the chance to gain college credit, receive hands-on training and the opportunity to network with professionals in their respective fields.

DOL says program participants will receive life skills management and career orientation, workplace preparation skills, and Occupational Safety & Health Regulation (OSHA) training from the department.
