The St. Croix Seashell Society will host an opening gala for its first Seashell Exhibit and Seashell Art Show on Friday, Jan. 23 at Fort Frederik from 6 to 9 p.m.
Local seashells will be on display as well as sea art from various local artists, including shell paintings by Tuna; local musical conch horn sculptor, Brian Bishop with “chaney”; ocean-inspired jewelry from Crucian Gold and others.
The V.I. Council on the Arts, Friends of Fort Frederik, and Mary E. Masters provided funding for the show, according to a press release issued about the event. Fiscal sponsorship was provided by the St. Croix Foundation for community development.
Ingrid Bough, territorial director of libraries, archives and museums provided the gallery space, and the efforts of DPNR’s Division of Fish and Wild Life provided additional support for the upcoming event, according to organizers.
The exhibit will be open for public viewing through May 2015 during the Fort’s regular hours, Monday through Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Saturday, 1 to 4 p.m. Admission is free.
The St. Croix Seashell Society is a newly formed group working to create museum space for the permanent display of local seashells.
The organization says it is “dedicated to community education and appreciation of the treasures we find in our seas,” and invites seashell collectors to share their collections with the public by exhibiting through donation or lone of their sea shells to the Society. Persons are also encouraged to sponsor a shelf or display case.
