2014 J’ouvert Morning In Christiansted: A Picture Collage

Entertainment / Featured / News / Virgin Islands / December 14, 2014

You will know the Crucian Christmas Carnival is in full swing after j’ouvert morning has taken place.

The word j’ouvert, defined as the official start of carnival at dawn on the Monday preceding Lent, was derived from the the French words ‘jour’ and ‘ouvert’, which means “the break of dawn.” And it was about the break of dawn when the throngs of people–overwhelmingly young–gathered at the Basin Triangle in Christiansted on Saturday morning to get on ‘wild n wassi,’ jamming at the front and back of the two big trucks that transported local bands, Pumpa and the Unit and Violators.

Young, middle-aged and a few older folks made their way through downtown Christiansted doing what they came to do–party. The gathering was flanked with VIPD officers monitoring the scene to ensure the traditional celebration went off without a hitch.

Both bands had massive followings, but it was evident the Violators crowed attracted more people in their early 30s, while Pumpa and the Unit drew most of the younger generation. Nonetheless, both bands brought out people who simply came to dance to the rhythms of St. Croix, wanting nothing more than to have a good time.

The event climaxed at the Christiansted Canegata Ballpark later that morning.

VI Consortium captured some of the scene. Have a look below:

I wear many hats, I suppose, but the one which fits me best would be journalism, second to that would be radio personality, thirdly singer/songwriter and down the line. I've been the Editor-In-Chief at my videogames website, Gamesthirst, for over 5 years, writing over 7,000 articles and more than 2 million words. I'm also very passionate about where I live, the United States Virgin Islands, and I'm intent on making it a better place by being resourceful and keeping our leaders honest. VI Consortium was birthed out of said desire, hopefully my efforts bear fruit. Reach me at [email protected].
