Following a Joint Boards of Elections decision Monday afternoon that allowed voters the use of stickers to record a candidate’s name on the ballot, volunteers for Sen. Alicia “Chucky” Hansen’s campaign stationed at polling sites across St. Croix handed out stickers containing the embattled senator’s name already pre-printed on them.
The VI Consortium obtained a packet of the stickers with the wording “Alicia “Chucky” Hansen” printed in black ink. They were contained in a small, transparent sandwich bag to avoid being damaged by the rainy weather.

The size and length of the stickers appear to be much larger than the size and length of the designated write-in area, where the stickers will be affixed to the ballot. The stickers were issued as a means of ensuring Hansen’s name is correctly recorded on the ballot.
According to a Hansen volunteer stationed outside the Pearl B. Larsen Elementary School in Christianstead, only a few of the stickers had been handed out during the morning, but he said he expected the pace to pick up later in the afternoon. The man, decked out in Hansen campaign gear, said he believes the longtime senator will be victorious in securing a seat in the 31st Legislature.
Ballots containing the Hansen stickers will be separated and hand-counted by Board of Elections members, along with write-in and Straight Party symbol ballots.
The VI Consortium is not aware of any other candidate who is using sticker votes on the ballot.
