Supporters of Kurt Vialet today. By. VI CONSORTIUM
Senator Kurt Vialet led the St. Croix Democratic Senate candidates during the 2020 Primary Election on Saturday, coming in first place with 1,194 votes. He was closely followed by Novelle Francis with 1,097 votes. Allison DeGazon and Genevieve Whitaker came in close in third and fourth place with 892 and 877 votes respectively.
On St. Thomas, Senator Donna Frett-Gregory led the group with 1,249 votes, a strong outcome that shows the lawmaker's staying power. She was followed by Athneil Thomas and Milton Potter with 995 and 970 votes respectively.
The results for all offices are here or below this article. The Election System of the Virgin Islands still has to count 179 absentee ballots for St. Croix, and 409 for the St. Thomas-St. John District, so tonight's results are preliminary and may change once all votes are counted.
Saturday's voter turnout was low compared to past elections. In fact more people voted early on St. Croix compared to those who came out on Election Day. A total of 1,829 Virgin Islanders voted early this year: 847 on St. Thomas, 945 on St. Croix and and 37 on St. John, according to the Election System. However, only 933 people voted on Election Day on St. Croix. In the St. Thomas St. John District, 1,139 people voted on Election Day, according to the Election System of the Virgin Islands.
Voters the Consortium spoke to said they felt there was a lack of campaigning from the candidates.
"Even if they had just put a bullhorn on their car and go through communities, it would have made a difference," said Dawn Sewer, who voted today at the St. Croix Educational Complex.
Ms. Sewer along with Mabel Henry decided to go out and vote nonetheless, pointing to the importance of the exercise. "Well you go out for anything else you might as well go out for a cause," Ms. Sewer. said.
Ms. Henry said words from the recently deceased Civil Rights icon, John Lewis, moved her to vote. "I felt guilty because of John Lewis," she said. "He came up in my spirit after watching all about him this past week. He did so much so therefore I said let me do my part."
