Man Drowns While Snorkeling in Buck Island St. Thomas Waters, Police Say

ST. THOMAS — A man was pronounced dead at the Juan F. Luis Hospital on Wednesday, Nov. 27 after drowning while snorkeling in Buck Island waters, V.I.P.D. Public Information Officer Toby Derima has announced.

The incident occurred in the morning time, and the V.I.P.D.'s Major Crime Unit was notified of it at about 10:45 a.m.

Upon arrival, detectives observed individuals performing CPR to an unresponsive white male. The male was then transported to the Schneider Regional Medical Center for further medical assistance, but was pronounced dead at the hospital, Mr. Derima said.

According to police, an investigation revealed that the victim may have drowned while snorkeling.

The victim was identified as 62-year-old Matthew Brown of North Carolina.  

The incident was under investigation by the Major Crime Unit as of Wednesday. The V.I.P.D. is asking anyone who may have information regarding this incident to contact the Criminal Investigation Bureau at (340) 774-2211 ext. 5606.
