Liberty VI has announced the commencement of a critical fiber installation project at Sion Farm and Sunny Isle Shopping Center in St. Croix, aiming to enhance high-speed internet access across the territory.
The construction is scheduled to begin on Thursday, April 25, and is expected to last approximately five weeks.
The project is designed to commission a new mobile site at Sion Farm while extending fiber connectivity to the Sunny Isle Shopping Center and nearby residential areas. Ravindra Maywahlall, the general manager of Liberty VI, stated, “As we acquire the necessary permits, we are moving forward with our Fiber to the Home construction projects so more locations in the territory can have access to our fiber fast internet.”
The scope of work at Sion Farm includes the installation of underground conduits and fiber optic cables necessary for a new mobile site. Additionally, the company will undertake micro-trenching along a section of Queen Mary Highway, passing behind Sunny Isle Shopping Center and intersecting Pepper Tree Road. The construction activities are planned on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Liberty VI said it aims to minimize the environmental impact of their construction efforts by employing micro-trenching techniques, which involve making a narrow 1 ¾-inch cut in the pavement and utilizing existing ducts to reduce pavement damage and dust. This method also enhances the network's durability against natural disasters and potential vandalism.
Local residents and commuters in the affected areas should anticipate minor traffic disruptions, including lane and partial road closures. Liberty VI has advised residents within the Estate Sion Farm community to park their vehicles on their properties and not on the street to prevent obstructions or potential damage.
