Vishnu (Victor) Chugani

It is with profound sadness that the Chugani and Aswani Family announces the passing of Vishnu (Victor) Chugani on March 18, 2024. Born in Karachi, in pre-partition India, in 1939, Vishnu's remarkable journey of 85 years was adorned with unwavering devotion to his family, his community, and a life filled with love and resilience.

Vishnu's early life, amidst the turmoil of Partition, led him and his family to seek refuge in Pune, marking the beginning of a courageous journey. His adventurous spirit took him to Hong Kong and around the world in business, eventually leading him to the love of his life, Indra Chugani, with whom he married in 1964 in Pune. Together, they embarked on a lifelong journey, making the United States Virgin Islands their home and blessing them with their beloved children, Gobind and Sharmila.

Vishnu was the visionary behind the House of Rajah, a jewelry empire that has thrived for 51 years, showcasing his entrepreneurial spirit across generations and continents. More than his business acumen, Vishnu was deeply committed to community service and cultural enrichment. He was a charter member of the St. Thomas Rotary Club, the India Association of the VI, a member of the United Way, the Chamber of Commerce, and one of the founders of the first Indian Radio Program in the Virgin Islands. Through these efforts, Vishnu played a pivotal role in culturally knitting the community together, leaving an indelible impact.

His charismatic presence and gracious spirit won the hearts of friends and customers globally, establishing him as a respected advisor and a true gentleman. Vishnu’s unwavering devotion was most apparent in his 35 years of caring for his wife, Indra, during her health struggles, a testament to his uncomplaining, loving nature.

Vishnu's legacy is cherished by his children, Gobind & Kusum, Sharmila & Manoj, grandchildren Alisha, Ashwin, and Shaina, brothers Mohan, Gulu, and Raju, and numerous extended family members. His teachings, stories, and the echo of his wisdom will continue to inspire those who knew him.

Funeral services for Vishnu Chugani will be held at Turnbull Funeral Home on Thursday, March 21, from 8-9 a.m., followed by Prayer Services at the Indian Cultural Center on Saturday, March 23, from 7-8 p.m. As we bid farewell, we hold onto cherished memories of Vishnu and Indra, celebrating life with laughter and love.

Om Shanti.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to the India Association at P O Box 1267, St. Thomas VI 00804-1267 (Cultural Center).
